WMAC Daegu 2026 Organizing Committee Appoints Olympic Marathon Champion Hwang Young-cho as Official Ambassador

The Organizing Committee for the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships (WMAC Daegu 2026) announced on the 30th that it has appointed Hwang Young-cho, the 1992 Barcelona Olympic gold medalist in the marathon, as the official ambassador for the event.

According to the committee, Hwang was selected as the ambassador based on his national symbolism and international recognition, making him the ideal candidate for the role.

Hwang has a long-standing connection with Daegu, having previously served as an ambassador for the 2003 Daegu Summer Universiade and as the marathon technical director for the 2011 Daegu World Championships in Athletics.

With this appointment, the committee plans to actively promote the event both domestically and internationally, encouraging participation from sports enthusiasts and the general public through various promotional activities.

As an ambassador, Hwang will play a key role in promoting the event through media interviews, promotional video shoots, social media content, and more.

Hwang stated, "I am honored to be named the ambassador for the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships, hosted by the city of Daegu, a global city of athletics. I will do my best to raise awareness of the event and encourage broad participation."

The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships is co-hosted by the City of Daegu and World Masters Athletics (WMA). The opening ceremony will be held on August 21, 2026, followed by competitions from August 22 to September 3 at Daegu Stadium and other venues over 13 days.

The event is the only global athletics competition for amateur athletes aged 35 and older in which participants are responsible for their own expenses, including airfare, accommodation, and registration fees.
